CHILDREN'S MINISTRY TOP 10 BASIC PRACTICES
Schedule
Keep your schedule in order to remember your assigned Sunday. You'll get a reminder card the week you're scheduled to volunteer.
Switching/Subs
When you can't make your assigned Sunday for any reason, please do your best to switch with someone on the schedule, (using the attached children's team phone list). Then let Carrie or Julie know A.S.A.P.
Never Alone
There will always be two adults present in the class/restrooms/hallways with the children at all times. Call to the hall monitor for help unless you have more than two adults in your class or you can send a youth helper on an errand for you. Preschool and younger children will take group bathroom breaks. Elementary students can use the restroom alone, one student at a time.
Handstamp
Check the parent's handstamp against the child's during pickup. Check everyone's handstamp, even if you know them. When stamping hands at check-in, give parents the option of someone different picking up their child and write down on the check-in sheet. This is the ONLY way you can allow someone without a handstamp to pick up a child. Please deal with parents as kindly and gently as possible, explaining our safety procedures.
Safety
Put the gate up at your classroom door before parents come to retrieve children. This will allow you to check handstamps and will create less confusion if parents cannot enter the class. Putting the gate up at the beginning of class also helps visitors and those less familiar with Five Stones to distinguish workers from parents, if only workers are present in the classroom.
Sanitation
Clean toys after each class on Sunday with the spray bottle and rags provided in the file cabinet. For diaper changes, use the plastic gloves provided, wash your hands with hand sanitizer, and put the soiled diaper in a blue scented bag. Always keep you and the baby facing out toward the room so people can see you when changing a diaper (to protect you and the baby).
Team Unity
Wear your red t-shirt and nametag. Help parents get to know your name. If you're new to the team, we'll give you a T-shirt on your first Sunday.
Check In Monitor
Use him/her to help you in any way needed. He/She will greet parents and children. Take them through the check in process and explain what happens with the stamp and the number. The monitor will keep the parent pager, if you need to page a parent let them know. The monitor can also help to get another helper if you have a large class, copy papers, assist during bathroom breaks, etc. If you need to reach Julie or Carrie during the 10:30 service, you can enter 777 in to the parent pager system.
Clean Up
At the end of class, put your teacher supplies back into the file cabinet. Put all miscellaneous toys back into the toy bins/shelves. The break down crew will come in and clear out the classroom.
Infant Crying
A child should be allowed to continuously for 5 minutes, then the parent should be paged unless the parent gives other instructions.
*Please be familiar with our policies so you know what to do once you're in the classroom.
Thanks for your passion for the children and your willingness to serve the children and families of Five Stones!
