Worship the Lord with All Your Heart

By Sarah Wells  |  October 1, 2012
The romantic language used to describe our relationship with God makes us uncomfortable. As a female, it isn’t as much of a stretch for me to imagine dancing in a field of flowers with Jesus, or, like in another worship song we sing, drinking from the cup in Jesus’s hand, laying back against his chest and feeling his heartbeat. I understand wanting to be romanced by the King of the ages. But this depiction of our relationship with God isn’t where I usually go first; I am more comfortable right now for whatever reason with God the Father-figure rather than God the lover of my soul. And my husband, well. He’s a guy.

Sexuality and You: Resources

By David Sherwood  |  November 4, 2011
Sunday's sermon on sexuality broke the church's silence on a hot topic, part of the Hot Potato Series at 5 Stones Community Church. Here are some additional resources:

Direction and Instruction

By Sarah Wells  |  July 4, 2011
I've approached the Bible many different ways since becoming interested in Scripture and God. My first attempt at reading the Bible began in Genesis and ended shortly thereafter in Leviticus. As a teen, I tried without success to find the section of the Bible where Thanksgiving prayers were located.

Clear Vision

By Christa Kalisz  |  May 2, 2011
On Sunday, April 10th I sat in awe of God. This was not the first time and it won’t be the last, but it was a crisp, clear moment of admiration, compassion, and complete joy.

It's Out of Your Hands

By Sarah Wells  |  April 9, 2011
I've been feeling some anxiety lately, that nasty little bug of an emotion that crawls in between your sheets each night, wriggling around so that all you can do is focus on it and where it might wriggle to next.

Praise Sarah, From Whom All Blessings Flow...?

By Sarah Wells  |  January 24, 2011
I'm having a hard time writing this blog because I want to sound cool. This is the trouble with confession - the idea is to humble yourself, not justify every little pip and squiggle. So here it is: your church service has revolved around one person for the last six months: me. I know you must feel so deceived - all along, I bet you thought you were there to worship God the Father and Jesus Christ his only begotten Son, but nooooo, it has all been about me. And most of the time, I haven't even been there to experience your glory and honor and praise.

More and More (Resolutions)

By Sarah Wells  |  January 10, 2011
The word on everyone’s lips at the beginning of a new year is “resolutions” – what do you resolve to do differently in the new year?

Risk

By Mallorie Miller  |  December 13, 2010
I've been thinking a lot about RISK recently. I have been asking myself the question, "Do I take risks or do I play it safe?" I am working through the Tangible Kingdom Primer (with an amazing group of people - shout out!) and the Scripture meditation for this week was about Abraham.

A Note from Christa ...

By Christa Kalisz  |  December 8, 2010
Looking back, I can hardly believe that a year has passed. It seems that just a short while ago a devoted servant of God asked me to take a step in the direction of a fully devoted follower; to take the time out of my life to volunteer in the lives of the children of my church.

All Prayers in One

By Jody Thomae  |  November 9, 2010
Throughout my prayer life, certain prayers have risen above the rest and have stayed with me. I repeat them—again and again. Not as mantras or route prayers, but as real prayers...

Lettuce Encouragement

By Sarah Wells  |  October 20, 2010
Without the sustaining power of community and relationship with other believers to encourage us in our walk, all we’d have is a pile of cheese, croutons, cucumbers, and dressing. We need lettuce.

Tackling Fear and Discouragement

By Sarah Wells  |  October 13, 2010
God makes three promises here: He is with you. It is HIS battle, not yours. He is more powerful than whatever it is you are facing.

Lifestyle Changes

By Sarah Wells  |  September 22, 2010
This fall, I am doing this crazy thing: I am taking off every Friday. That's right people, four-day work week until 2011. There are two huge payoffs to this schedule.

This Is How We Do It

By Sarah Wells  |  August 25, 2010
How many truths of God are written on your heart? For how readily available the Scriptures are today in print, I cannot say that they are readily available on my tongue, in answer to others struggles, concerns, or worries. As I go about my daily tasks at work and at home, there are countless times when I wish I could pull up that one thing that I remember reading once or twice about this particular issue, and oh, how it would be encouraging or helpful! Montel Jordan just can't help me out here.

Maybe she's born with it. Maybe it's Maybelline.

By Sarah Wells  |  June 8, 2010
Several weeks ago I found myself an hour away from home after a medical procedure wearing office attire, no change of clothes and no makeup.

A Word From Ben

By Josh Sumpter  |  May 30, 2010
I saw that one student had left a fairly large comment. Now usually it is the youth leaders that teach the students, but I was humbled as one student poured out his heart - writing about how God is working in his life.

Good People, Huh?

By Josh Sumpter  |  April 21, 2010
Everyone seems like they have it together. Church becomes equated with the "good" place, while everyone else and the world is "bad." The reality for many people is that the church is a cold place for broken souls.

Is THE SHACK heresy? Are the Chronicles of Narnia?

By David Sherwood  |  March 5, 2010
We knew it would happen eventually. Frankly we thought it would happen far sooner and in far greater quantity than we have seen to date. But we knew The Shack was edgy enough to prompt some significant backlash, which is why so many publishing companies didn’t want to take it on at the beginning.

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant

By Sarah Wells  |  February 8, 2010
In preparation for our book discussion on The Red Tent in February, I'd like to walk through the biblical account of the marriages of Leah and Rachel and what happened in Shechem. I think it will be interesting to look at this account vs. what is given by Anita through Dinah in The Red Tent, and consider these stories as they relate to us today.

Shoveling, More Shoveling...and well, Shoveling.

By Josh Sumpter  |  February 6, 2010
Two days ago the weather man said we would get 1-2 feet of snow. I laughed. The snow laughed back as it fell all night. And so here I am today, exhausted. Why, you might ask?

McDonalds. A cup of coffee. Hash browns. McMuffins. Sitting next to an awesome youth leader for conversation. Forty minutes. This is a quick glimpse of the setting experienced with Josh Derr on Wednesday morning...
